A nine-member Board of Directors for Ghana Broadcasting Corporation has been sworn into office by the National Media Commission (NMC). The Board which has Mr. Francis Mills Robertson as its Chairman has been tasked to steer the affairs of GBC for the next two years. GBC is a state-owned public broadcaster and Its highest governing authority is a board appointed by the National Media Commission (NMC), the constitutional body created under Chapter 12 of the 1992 Constitution and the National Media Commission Act of 1993 to insulate state media from government control.
While a Board of Directors typically guides and advises an organization on various matters, their specific action will be to ensure that GBC fulfills its mandate as a public broadcaster.
The Director General of GBC, Prof. Amin Alhassan said the Board has been inaugurated at an opportune time when government has approved a new plan to retool, restructure and transform GBC. This, he said, will be implemented under a five year strategic plan from 2026 to 2030 which will enable GBC reposition itself to keep pace in the contemporary media landscape. According to him, GBC operates with three mandates, i.e. universal access to content, diversity of content and support for government communication and national development. Additionally, the new developed plan for GBC will transition it to operate under the name Broadcasting House 4 (BH4). He credited government for the initiative in transforming GBC.
Swearing in the members, the Chairman of the National Media Commission, Prof. Akua Pokua Britwum charged them to continue with the ongoing reforms notably the outdated scheme of service, the new organogram as well as moves to prioritize the welfare of staff.
The outgoing Board Chairman, Samuel Kojo Intsiaba thanked the NMC for giving them the opportunity to serve and work towards the transformation of GBC.
Mr. Francis Mills Robertson, the Chairman of the new board expressed appreciation for the honour done them in giving them the opportunity to put their skills to work and pledged that the board will act in dignity and patriotism.
