Broadcast College

The GBC Broadcasting College (GBC BC) is a conglomeration of the Radio, Television and Engineering Training Schools of GBC (Ghana Broadcasting Corporation). The three schools have been engaged in broadcasting training in their respective areas since the inception of Radio and Television Broadcasting Services in Ghana.

The courses of the schools were wide-ranging in scope and spanned from foundation to advanced level.  Certificates of participation were presented to course participants. A large number of workers acquired competencies, knowledge and skills in their careers through years of structured in-house training. Many workers progressed in their career and received further training in other countries.

Broadcasting is highly competitive and stations require well-trained professionals to survive. Also, because of the rapid growth in multi-channel broadcasting and new services in broadcasting, there is a large demand for broadcasting professionals – and who can offer these skills other than the pioneer broadcaster in Ghana.  On account of its experience and capacity in broadcasting training, there’s no doubt about this.

Ghana Broadcasting Corporation therefore decided to restructure and use its training resources to support the growing industry, and help achieve excellence and professionalism in broadcasting in Ghana as a whole.

History

The Radio and Engineering training schools were established in the 1950s to train school leavers with General Certificate of Education or Intermediate Level of Technical Education for programme and technical jobs.

For radio, the objective was to give trainees the general understanding and principles behind programming and skills needed for various broadcasting roles, including script writing and production skills, and philosophies behind broadcasting programming.

A hands-on learning approach was used, giving trainees a real world experience of various rules in broadcasting.

Engineering and Technical staff were catered for by the Engineering Training School with courses spanning from foundation level to advanced level broadcast technology with the objective of developing the knowledge and skills required for operating, installing or maintaining broadcast equipment. Engineers and Technicians constantly received training at different levels.

When television was introduced in 1965 A television training school was established alongside for developing television programme staff for various television roles.

A television technical school was also established to train the TV Technicians on the principles of television, the basics of Television equipment, and studio production. The television technical school was later merged with engineering training school, while the programme side remained as television training school.

Brief History of GBC Engineering Training School

The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation Engineering Training School (GBC-ETS) was established on 14th November 1955 with three staff members under the leadership of Mr. H. H. Walter. It was created to provide technical training and strengthen engineering support for broadcasting operations.

GBC-ETS became one of the first well-structured Broadcast Engineering Training Schools in Africa, playing a key role in developing broadcast engineering skills across the region. One of its flagship programmes was the six-month residential Technical Assistant (TA) course, which attracted trainees from Ghana and other African countries, including Tanzania, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia. Local organisations such as Castle Communications, the Academy of Sciences, and the Ghana Film Industry Corporation (now taken over by TV3) also benefited from the training.

With rapid advances in broadcast technology, the demand for skilled technical personnel increased. In response, the GBC-ETS became well placed to deliver practical training in modern broadcast technology and produce competent technicians for the industry. The school now runs a six-month, competency-based programme for members of the public with backgrounds in electronics and/or telecommunications. Successful participants will receive a Certificate of Competence.
